Zomaland

Zomato, one of the leading restaurant discovery and food delivery startup in the Indian market, has announced its foray into the events space with the launch of Zomato Events.

This new vertical from the food-tech startup will be headed by Chaitanya Mathur, who was formerly a co-founder of Grub Fest. As a part of Zomato Events, the company is launching Zomaland, which is pitched as a multi-city food carnival that will have street performances, pop-up restaurants and food exhibitions, among others.

Commenting on this, Gaurav Gupta, Chief Operating Officer at Zomato, said:

At Zomato, given our focus on food, we tend to think of ourselves as a food company, and not just a food-tech company. We fundamentally believe that that the restaurant channel, or the out-of-home food cooking theme will be dominant as well, and we are trying to grow that as much as we can.

The idea behind doing this is that if there is a food experience that needs to be brought to the user, even if it’s an offline one, we should be the ones bringing it to the consumer. We want consumers to have a great experience with food offline as well.

Zomaland will be kicked-off next year and initially, the company will hold the event across four cities. For this, the Gurgaon-based company is partnering with over 400 restaurant. Gaurav Gupta is estimating around 200,000 footfalls during the course of the event.

The development comes at a time when the food-tech startup has brought back is former executive Durga Raghunath as the Senior Vice President of Growth earlier this month.

Prior to that, last month, the company had appointed Chaitanya Mathur as the head of its events-driven vertical. In the past few months, the company has hired several senior people like ex-MakeMyTrip COO Mohit Gupta as the CEO for the food delivery business; Sameer Maheshwary as the CFO; Rohithari Rajan as the Global Head for its ad sales business; and Thomas Phillippe as the General Counsel.
