At the recently held Mobile World Congress (MWC) held in Spain, Telstra has chosen Ericsson for several of its key programs that will support Telstra’s transformation program called “Network of the Future.”
Under the three-year optical transmission upgrade, Ericsson will provide a nationwide capacity boost for growth in mobility, broadband, cloud and video services.
As part of the rollout agreement to expand Telstra’s long haul, Ericsson will supply, install, and integrate the next generation of converged packet-optical solutions from Ciena, a US-based global supplier of telecommunications networking equipment that will provide scalable, flexible, and programmable optics.
Other features of the program include collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies to collaborate and implement a 5G New Radio (NR) trials commercialization, which will form the basis for global standards.
According to the official statement of Ericsson, the trails in Australia aim to accelerate commercialization of the global 3GPP 5G standard to drive the 5G ecosystem towards scale.
Further, the program prepares nationwide transport network for Internet of Things (IoT) for higher capacity, latency, reliability, resiliency, and mobile core/ NFV distribution.
On Cloud, Telstra aims to extend the Ericsson cloud platform to include a media-optimized cloud that will carry dedicated broadcast media workloads. The statement elucidates Telstra’s goal for the broadcast sector to “provide reliable and resilient network access, with high bandwidth and latency requirements, which will support broadcasters in their shift toward the use of IP processing for broadcast content.
