Google’s Android Nougat has had one of the most sluggish adoption rates I have ever seen for an operating system that has this kind of reach and audience. After five painstaking months, the Android Nougat operating system has finally managed to cross the 1 percent mark with respect to adoption rate. As per data coming in straight from Google, the platform has reached 1.2 percent of Android users.
The Android 7.0 Nougat started hitting devices in August, last year. However, Google was extremely selective with which smartphone received the update and initially, it was just Nexus and Pixel devices. While Nexus received the update in August, Pixel devices started shipping with Nougat in October.
From then on, it has been a slow uphill climb to crossing the 1 percent adoption mark. The company has now released it for several other devices as well and is expected to make it compatible with many more devices in the coming months.
The diagram above shows that Lollipop and Marshmallow are still the biggest Android platforms. While Android 5.0/5.1 Lollipop has the largest adoption rate with 32.9%, Android 6.0 Marshmallow is up 1.1 points to arrive at 30.7%. Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and 2.3 Gingerbread on the other hand, are amongst the ones with the least reach and have occupied 1 percent of the total population.

All this data comes through the Platform Versions page. Google’s data is sourced (mostly) directly through the Play Store and as such, is pretty reliable. Meanwhile, this could well mean that Nougat adoption could require at least the whole of 2017 to surpass Marshmallow and Lollipop platforms.
