The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has launched three apps to help customers track their call and data quality. It has also launched a portal and revamped its website, making it easier for customers to access information.

The three apps which are- Trai MyCall App, MySpeed app, and Do-not-disturb 2.0 collect feedback in real time from over 1 billion mobile users and send them to service providers so they can improve their quality of service.

According to Trai chairman RS Sharma,

We think crowdsourcing is the best way to get customer feedback, better and cost effective than surveys or other studies, and we’ve tried to leverage this technology tool in the past for bringing out the true picture of the impact of the services. We’re trying to improve the collection methodology where Trai will pick up the data charges for providing the feedback to the regulator

The MyCall Android App will allow users to rate the quality of their phone call in real time on a scale from one star to five stars. The app will also have a few questions regarding whether the users were outside, or inside and whether they were travelling.

The app allows users to choose how frequently they want to be asked feedback and are also given the option of saying a call was dropped. Additionally, users will also be able to give additional details such as background noise or an audio delay. All data is collected anonymously.

The MySpeed app, which already has over 1.5 million downloads, allows users to measure their 3G and 4G speeds and will come with automated testing of data speeds which will also happen anonymously and free of charge.

The regulator said,

Now we can make statistically valid sampling, to give a better more accurate report. The crowd sourced data so collected can be viewed in aggregated form on the interactive map based portal

The Do-not-disturb app has been revamped to include a few updates. The app comes with a spam detector for SMS and will mark the messages as spam but will wait for users to take action. The app will identify senders and send them warnings against sending more messages. The app has also included a feature where in users will be able to see updates on the complaints they have made.

Trai has also launched a portal on which service providers such as cable operators, DTH operators and multi-system operators must register. This portal will allow information to be broken down and sent to operators and put all information gathered from the operators in one place for users to access with ease.

The new and improved Trai website now gives away free online subscriptions, online submission of responses to consultation papers, as well as online registration of open house discussions.
