Reliance Jio, which officially launched its services a month ago, has taken the Indian telecom industry by storm. With the launch of its introductory Welcome offer, the company today claims that it has amassed over 16 million subscribers. This makes it the first telecom operator in the entire world to have achieved such milestone in just one month.

The company managed to get such huge number of subscribers in such a small time due to its offering of 4G services, including access to its exclusive apps, and unlimited access to data, voice calls and SMS, and that too for several months.

Commenting on this, Mr. Mukesh D. Ambani, Chairman, Reliance Industries Limited, said,

We are delighted and humbled by the overwhelming response across India to the Jio Welcome Offer. Jio is built to empower every Indian with the power of data. We are delighted that people have recognized this and are utilizing our services to the fullest. We are customer-obsessed and committed to improve every day to exceed expectations of our customers.

While the company has revealed that it has crossed 16 million subscribers mark, it hasn’t revealed how many of them were already using the service before the official launch, i.e. 5th September. Although the company has launched its services during its Annual General Meeting, the commercial launch of Reliance Jio is slated for 1st January 2017.

Before the commercial launch, Jio needs to enhance connection points as customers are constantly facing network drops and due to company’s disputes with the competition, calls are almost impossible to make. Also, the internet speed has also decrease drastically after the company announced Jio Welcome Offer.

Jio recently also introduced Aadhaar-based paper-less SIM activation across 3,100 cities and towns, through which customers can have a functional card in a matter of minutes. As per the company, it will be extended soon to remaining areas in the coming weeks.

It will be interesting to see how Jio manages to win over the competition after its commercial launch in January 2017. After the soft-launch of Jio last month, many telecom operators have discounted their pricing for data, and are coming up with various offers for 4G data.
