Internet unfortunately had a wrong positioning in Bangladesh. The profit seeking telecom companies were the first, to aggressively promote internet among the young . To attract the potential young users, social networking was made the bait.
An aggressive “dark promotion” began. “With internet you can stay connected to your friends round the clock using Facebook, Whatsapp etc.” This strategy worked superb for the telecom companies but have led 90% of the forty million internet users to believe that “Internet means Facebook”.
To redefine internet usage Bangladesh Internet Week will be a country wide festival celebrating the uses and the benefits of internet and internet enabled applications. The various scopes of internet will be unveiled and this will hopefully lead to internet usage extension and expansion.
Through the Bangladesh Internet Week initiative, the organizers hope to increase their awareness of the life changing capabilities of the internet for employment, education, eCommerce, agriculture, health benefits, e Governance, public services, entertainment and so forth.
Bangladesh Internet Week will be held from the 5th to the 11th of September and it is being jointly organized by Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS), Grameenphone and the ICT Division of the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology.
Along with three major expos taking place in Dhaka, Rajshahi and Sylhet, this internet festival will also be held in 487 upazilas throughout Bangladesh.The goal is to create 10 million new internet users in a week.Hoping that the efforts play a considerable role to redefine internet usage in Bangladesh.
