If you happen to be a Twitter user and a non-U.S. resident (which is 3 out of every 4 Twitter users, as per stats), then Twitter has got an updated privacy policy for you (via The Next Web). Announcing the updates via blog post, the micro-blogging company has moved jurisdiction of all non-US residents to Ireland, under its new entity, Twitter International Company.
Announcing the new update, Twitter said,
If you live outside the United States, our services are now provided to you by Twitter International Company, our company based in Dublin, Ireland.
If you live in the United States, the services will continue to be provided to you by Twitter, Inc., based in San Francisco, California, under United States law.
International users account for over 75% of total Twitter users, amounting up to 330 Million in number. Looking at those numbers, a change in privacy policy for non-US users is a significant update. Citing the reason for the change, Twitter says,
As more people around the world use our services, we’ve expanded our operations to improve how we support our users globally. The changes to our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy indicate this expansion and better reflect how we’re providing our services to users.
Apart from the change in center of legal jurisdiction, Twitter has also announced a few more changes to its Privacy Policy. For example, the company has clarified that you can sign up for our Twitter services using a pseudonym as your name, or using your phone number as your contact information.
