Well, there’s ample good news for YouTube lovers in store! You favorite video streaming website seems to be testing out a new dark mode, which is currently hidden to most users. This feature has been spotted by a Reddit user, but you’ll also be able to activate this new setting in a few simple steps. All set to turn down the light?
We know you’re all about that dark mode life, thus, we will show you how to activate the same on YouTube in your browser. To begin, we would suggest you two very important tasks. First and foremost, you need to be running the latest version of Chrome (version 57, though I made it work on my Opera beta browser as well) and second — sign in to your YouTube account.
The steps to activate dark mode on your browser are as under:
- Open the developer tools sidebar by pressing the keyboard shortcut Option + Command + I on Mac, and Ctrl + Shift + I on Windows.
- Click the Console tab in the sidebar that just popped up in your browser.
- Paste in the following command: document.cookie=”VISITOR_INFO1_LIVE=fPQ4jCL6EiE” into the console window and press enter.
- Close the developer tools sidebar and refresh the YouTube page.
- Click on your YouTube profile picture on the top right, you’ll now see a Dark Mode option in the dropdown. Select this option and toggle the switch to enable the turn down the lights — activate the mode.
Here, the changes will be applied to your browser as we’re altering the cookies for the website. The dark mode will only work on your Chrome browser — that too not in incognito windows. Also, you’ll notice other significant changes to YouTube’s user interface, which have been under testing for quite some time now. The video streaming platform now includes some material design components and element position changes.
YouTube hasn’t officially announced the features, as well as the material redesign of the platform but it is definitely testing some new changes. The dark mode looks rather fresh and calming to the eyes. Do you prefer light or dark mode? Comment your thoughts down below.
