PlayStation Brand Marketing VP John Koller has today announced through the PlayStation Blog that an upcoming PS4 System Software 4.5.0 will be the next major update for the game system.
With this latest software update, the PlayStation 4 will finally be able to support external hard drives (something Xbox One users have been able to do since launch). Players will just have to plug-in any USB 3.0 HDD right into their PS4’s ports and voilah, more space! This feature will only be supporting external hard drives that are up to 8 TB in size.
The players will now be given an option to download and install any applications or games directly to the external hard drive they have connected and “the saved contents are easily manageable through the settings menu.” Also, any applications that are installed on the external hard drive will be showing up in the Content Launcher of the Home Screen.
PS4 System Software update 4.5.0 will also include a feature that’ll allow you to apply a custom wallpaper as the background image for your PS4’s home screen. Talking about this feature, the official blog post reads,
Drop-shadows on text, and the option to dim the Function Area, will help keep the system icons and texts on the home screen clearly visible even if the background image you selected is super bright
In addition to that, users will now also be provided with the capability of editing their screenshots using the Photo Mode in Sharefactory to create their own personalised wallpaper.
Apart from all that, this update will contain “Quick Menu Refresh” that will bring “additional improvements” to PS4 Quick Menu “to make it even more accessible”. After this update is applied, the Quick Menu will be covering lesser of the gameplay screen than it did before.
The simplified notification List is another feature that the update will be making much needed adjustments to. According to Koller, they have now condensed all of the open tabs to a single simplified list, making it a lot easier to be able to see all of your notifications in a single glance. It has been expanded on in the blog post as under,
Players will also be able to quickly access the Notification settings from the Options Menu to turn off or customize which pop-up notifications appear on your screen, so you’re only being notified about your top priorities
John Koller noted that these are not the only features that will be added to the PS4 with the upcoming update, so keep an eye out for further details.
