The much loved NES Classic Edition has surely become one of the tougher gifts to come across during this holiday season. Congratulations to all of those who’ve already managed to locate one (or two for that matter). But going by the stats provided by industry tracker NPD (National Purchase Diary), Nintendo has officially sold over 196,000 pieces of money-making nostalgia bait to it’s US customers starting from its launch all the way till the end of November.
Now compare that number to Media-Create’s numbers, which showcased the Japanese sales of their own Classic Mini Famicom systems that surpassed 261k units in just the first week. Clearly, the demand is there, and in abundance, but the real question here is if Nintendo will be able to pump out enough of these systems to boost their availability before the current holiday rush is over. (if it decides follows this up with a SNES Classic Edition, we’ll probably be lining up all over again. that’s for sure.)
In other relevant but non-NES news, the same NPD report showed that, as expected, Sony’s PlayStation 4 is right back on top of the console sales heap. According to lead data analyst Sam Naji, it was successfully pushed till that point by its new PS4 Slim / Uncharted 4 bundle that has (believe it or not) accounted for 30 percent of the overall hardware units sold. Overall, however, considering even with the Xbox One S, PS4
Overall, however, considering even with the Xbox One S, PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro all on store shelves, customers have spent 35 percent less on video game hardware this year than they did in 2015. Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon somehow managed to outsell the series’ previous best selling combo (White and Black) by eight percent. We’re now waiting for Nintendo’s upcoming hybrid console ‘Switch,’ whose specs will be detailed at an event on January 12.
