Melbourne is all set to become Australia’s largest city by the year 2030, with Australians being the highest users of internet banking and online shopping services amongst 34 democracies. Towards this vision, Victoria’s world-class Data61 Cyber Security and Innovation Hub is up and running. Over the next three years, the center will be creating 140 new jobs.
Based in the Docklands’ Good Shed, it will house several other organizations including a collaboration with Oxford University’s Global Cyber Security Capacity Center (GCSCC) and Victoria’s new Oceania Cyber Security Center (OCSC), bringing together eight Victorian universities and major private sector partners.
The Andrews Labor Government has strongly supported Data61 — the digital research arm of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization(CSIRO) — in growing their Melbourne presence as part of its push to make Victoria a cyber-security and technology powerhouse.
Speaking at the opening of the hub on Thursday, Adrian Turner, CEO of Data61 said that cyber-security is an AU$98 billion global market, expected to grow at AU$222 billion by 2020.
Australia’s economy is undergoing transformation, with every industry becoming increasingly data driver.
Aside from bringing together our own Victorian-based workforce, this new facility will also provide a dedicated space for Data61 to deepen its key relationships within the cyber-security ecosystem, and we’re excited to welcome Australia Post, Optus, and PwC as our first wave of industry partners.

With almost a quarter of Australian cyber-security positions taking six months or longer to fill and 10 percent never filled at all, the Labor Government is also improving training and education in the sector. The hub is expected to create over 140 jobs, inlcuding those for Phd students, over the period of next three years.
Last year the Government invested AU$4.7 million in developing a training program to meet the growing need for cyber-security skills. The institute now offers a one-year certificate in cyber-security, Australia’s first dedicated vocational course for the sector.
