Microsoft has announced its intentions of acquiring Intentional Software. The acquisition, which is taking place for an undisclosed amount of money, will also see Intentional founder, Chairman, and CTO Charles Simonyi return to the fold. Simonyi, it should be remembered, helped with the development of several of Microsoft’s most popular Office tools like Excel and Word.

Speaking on the topic,

Today, I’m pleased to share that we have signed an agreement to acquire Intentional Software, a company that has been focused on creating a platform for a new generation of team productivity apps.

The company was founded in 2002 by Charles Simonyi, who is a pioneer in the area of intentional programming. While what exactly Intentional Software does is shrouded in a bit of mystery, we do know that it started out with the intent of making programming less complicated. As programming evolved over the past few years, the company has applied their attention to the development of productivity scenarios for the future workforce.

Speaking on the topic, Simonyi said:

I am excited, stoked, amped, and elated to join forces again with Microsoft, the premier high-tech company in the world. I am very happy that after this deal is completed, the talented team at Intentional will have a fantastic new home to continue our work and contribute to great products. I want to share with you why I feel this way.

Intentional’s team appears to be heading straight for R&D at the software major. Considering that its founder has already spent considerable time at the company, the transition is likely to take place with a minimum of friction. Of course, the deal is still subject to regulatory approval however, there isn’t a particular hurdle that could prevent regulators from giving the deal a green signal.
