After all the hassles regarding their game, Hello Games has finally launched the proposed major new update for No Man’s Sky. They’ve named it the “Foundation Update,” the patch numbered #1.1 brings in the first portions of the game’s new base-building feature and also serves as a “foundation for things to come.”
As part of a post on the developer’s website, Hello Games stated that this foundation update is the first of “many” free patches that will be rolling out for No Man’s Sky. A new video for the patch was also released. More features of this patch include three new game modes, each of which features different rulesets:
- Normal mode is the original chilled exploration experience.
- Creative mode allows players to explore the universe without limits, and build a huge base.
- Survival mode really changes the game, creating a much more challenging endurance experience.
Coming back to the base building system, you can establish an outpost with the use of “modular structures and decorations,” which are made using the resources you’ll come across while exploring the game world (or rather, Universe). You can also do the following with the base-building feature as the post suggests:
- Recruit alien lifeforms to help research new technology. Farming, engineer, weapons and science specialists are hirable from Space Stations.
- Use Terminus Teleporters in Space Stations to teleport to and from your base at will.
- Expand your base with storage containers to stockpile precious resources and rare products.
- Find an even more beautiful location and you can simply dismantle your previous homestead to refund all of the spent resources
This No Man’s Sky Foundation update further adds a new farming system along with the ability to purchase and customize “interstellar freighters to transfer resources”, while there will be new biome and star-specific resource types that can be discovered and looted from different planets; these resources can then be used to craft new items.
If you could have lived our lives over the last months, you’d know how meaningful this is.

No Man’s Sky released back in August for the PS4 and PC missing a significant number of features that director Sean Murray had discussed prior to the game’s launch; the game and all of its creators were criticised heavily by the fans for this. Just earlier this month, PlayStation executive Shawn Layden publicly acknowledged the fact that Hello Games is “still working at it.”
