Ed-tech and youtubers here in India, are literally on a roll. Unacademy, an online education platform, is the latest ed-tech startup (with Youtube as its platform) to join that fund-raising roll. The startup has today announced, that it has raised a seed investment worth $500K  led by Blume Ventures.

Along with Blume Ventures, a plethora of angel investors also participated in the current round, including Google’s Rajan Anandan, CommonFloor founder Sumit Jain, redBus founder Phanindra Sama, TaxiForSure’s founder Aprameya Radhakrishna and former Flipkart executive Sujeet Kumar.

Gaurav Munjal, CEO at Unacademy, said,

Unacademy’s vision is to distribute knowledge of the educators and innovators in the form of mini courses having lessons of not more than 10 minutes each.

Commenting about the funding in the company, Karthik Reddy, managing partner at Blume Ventures, said,

Delivery of education in India needs radical shifts. Unacademy is a manifestation of the team’s vision to make all forms of educative material so intuitive and accessible that learning becomes extremely interesting and scalable.

Founded by Gaurav Munjal, Hemesh Singh, Roman Saini and Sachin Gupta in December 2015, Unacademy acts as a free education tool. It is concentrating towards the cause of providing free and quality education in the country.

It was started as a Youtube channel by Gaurav Munjal in 2010, which featured educational talks by experts in the domain. The company claims to have received over 12 million views till date on its video channel.

Gaurav and Hemesh had resigned from their position of CEO and CTO respectively from Flatchat in order to start this initiative. Roman Saini resigned from his role of an IAS officer in order to join the Unacademy team.

Working with a vision to have best explanation of every educational topic in all languages, the startup claims to have almost 1 million video views a month on it’s YouTube channel and has more than 150,000 subscribers, making it one of the top educational youtube channels in the country.
