At CES 2016, Samsung on Monday unveiled the SSD T3, the successor to last year’s T1. The T3 is a very compact and portable external solid state drive that offers multi-terabyte storage capacity. This new drive offers 2GB of storage space along with Samsung’s proprietary Vertical NAND (V-NAND) and SSD TurboWrite technology.

The T3 will be available in a variety of storage options which include 250GB, 500GB, 1TB and the highly marketed 2TB variant. Last year’s T1 was available in the first 3 options. Adding the new boosted 2TB storage capacity makes Samsung a market leader when it comes to SSD’s.

The T3 brings in higher data transfer speeds too with sequential read and write speeds of up to 450MB/s with a USB 3.1 interface.

The storage size of the drive may be high, but when it comes to its physical space and mass it’s one of the most compact and lightweight devices you can find in the market. It is smaller than even a business card and weighs a meager 50 grams.

The size and weight of the device may make you seem that its fragile. Far from it, the device features a new shock-resistant metal case and internal frame, the T3 can withstand up to 1500G of force and will survive a drop of up to two meters. It also comes with a Thermal Guard which prevents overheating.

Another notable feature is the 256-bit hardware encryption the drive provides. This allows you to enable  high level of security and protection across Windows, Mac and Android OS based devices.

“Following the successful worldwide launch of the Portable SSD T1 in 2015, we made several significant upgrades to the T3 based on the feedback and needs of our customers, which included content creators and business professionals in particular,” said Un-Soo Kim, Senior Vice President of Brand Product Marketing, Memory Business at Samsung Electronics. “As such, the T3 delivers the outstanding performance, storage capacity and durability needed from an external storage device for today’s mobile lifestyle, without compromising on style or security.
