India-based restaurant searching app start-up, Zomato, today started its operations in Canada. This is a part of company’s move, to establish its presence in over 16 countries, following acquisition of two European firms, a couple of months back
Zomato Canada will provide a comprehensive information of over 11,000 restaurants in the Greater Toronto Area and is available on web and mobile (iOS, Android, Windows Phone, and Blackberry). Zomato has earmarked a staggering $10 Million for its expansion plans in Canada.
When talked about Zomato’s recent expansion in Canada, CEO Deepinder Goyal said,
We’re proud to include Toronto in our growing list of world-class cities. It boasts of a vibrant restaurant industry, and Canada is a hugely promising market for us.We are committed to making Zomato the go-to restaurant discovery service in the country. Canada is truly a great starting point for us before we think of getting into the United States.
Jeremy Potvin, Country Manager, Zomato Canada, said,
We’re excited to bring Zomato to Canada and help the folks here find great places to eat anything they’re craving. Whether it’s Tourtière, Arctic Char, Smoked meat, Cheval or Bloody Caesar, Canadians are bona fide food lovers.
Zomato already has a sizeable local team and are in the process of growing it further. It aims to have a 50-member team within the next twelve months. Over the next few months, the restaurant searching app plans to expand to other cities across Canada, including Vancouver, Montreal, Ottawa, and Calgary.
Last year, Zomato raised $37 Million round of funding from Sequoia Capital and existing investors Info Edge. This has taken Zomato’s total funding to over $ 53 million. As per company claims, it sees over 30 million visits across its web and mobile platforms every month. Traffic has grown by over 300% in the past year.
