Just as Amazon geared up for the busiest period of sales in the year, they were thumped by a mysterious data breach. This data breach comes just two days before the highly awaited Black Friday and Cyber Monday Sales. The breach caused customer names and email addresses to be disclosed on the website. Although the e-commerce behemoth has publicly acknowledged the breach, they have remained tight-lipped regarding the cause for the breach and the number of users affected.
Consumers were intimated by the breach via an email, wherein the company took responsibility of an inadvertent breach that has happened. Amazon has also mentioned that the leak wasn’t because of something which customers did and a password change wasn’t necessary. The exact demographic of the breach still remains unknown. According to experts, while the people affected were from the US and the UK, it is likely that some of the 150 million Amazon users in India could also have been struck.

Since the Facebook CA data breach, people have been on the edge regarding their privacy on the internet. And data breaches such as these warrants their apprehensions. This breach, right on the heels of a blockbuster-expected holiday season, could quite possible result in reduced sales of Alexa enabled smart devices like the Amazon Echo and Echo Dot during the forthcoming Black Friday Sales.
