Stripe is releasing a brand new quarterly publication. Aptly called the Increment, the publication is coming from a company built around an engineering core and as such, will feature geeky stuff like opinion pieces, how-to guides and interviews from subject matter experts. The issue has Susan Fowler has its editor-in-chief.

Here is how the inaugural edition describes the magazine:

Increment is dedicated to covering how teams build and operate software systems at scale, one issue at a time. In this, our inaugural issue, we focus on industry best practices around on-call and incident response.

The main idea here is to create a central website that would allow users to explore different topics that are important to software engineers and teams. The publication will be a sort of a platform that will enable subject matter experts from across the industry to come on board and share the knowledge they have gleaned with others who might be interested in the same sort of thing.

In case you are wondering about Stripe’s choice for an Editor-in-chief, she is quite well qualified for the job. Not only does she possess extensive experience in building standardized systems within software teams, but she also has a vast treasure trove of experience obtained from working with companies like Plaid, PubNub and Uber.

Fowler was recently in limelight because of the way she came out and spoke against the workplace harassment taking place at Uber. The fallout from her public Medium post led to one of the worst PR crisis Uber had ever faced, leading to investigations and high profile expulsions from the company.

Apparently, the whole idea for increment came about when Fowler and Stripe co-founder Patrick Collison started discussing the former’s writing.  We already know it can be pretty effective and is capable of rousing people to the actual, on the ground situation. At it’s base, the magazine will seek to push software education and help solve problems faced by software devs. The company has already launched a forum as part of its Stripe Atlas program.

The company is also planing to make each quarterly issue revolve around a particular theme. It will be sharing the themes for upcoming issues beforehand and will also invite suggestions for posts from readers.  This first issue for instance, about on-call and incident response.
