steam awards

Right along with today’s launch of the Steam Black Friday Sale, Valve has rolled out the public voting system in its first-ever Steam Awards as well. This time around all the nominations will be chosen by you — that’s right, you, not unknown and at times even biased judges. This is somewhat like a people’s choice awards.

Your favourite gamer can be chosen for contention in the eight different categories that we’ve listed for you below. Additionally, if you’re not a fan of how they’ve been broken down, Steam want you to suggest one of your own. Here’s a list of the categories:

  • The “Test of Time” Award
  • The “I’m Not Crying, There’s Something In My Eye” Award
  • The “Just Five More Minutes” Award
  • The “Whoooaaaaaaa, Dude!” Award
  • The “Villain Most In Need of a Hug” Award
  • The “Game Within a Game” Award
  • The “I Thought This Game Was Cool Before It Won An Award” Award
  • The “Best Use Of A Farm Animal” Award
  • The “We Didn’t Think Of Everything” Award

In the beginning, I was rather skeptical about the whole event, mostly because it seemed so obviously and utterly pointless. One category (I know – you know – which one I’m talking about, “dude”) is literally for games that “melt your face,” or maybe you just thought so because when you played it you were still tripping from the anaesthesia given to you while having your wisdom teeth taken out. But then I realised that even the considerably “real” award shows, for video games or pretty much any other form of entertainment, follow the same exact vague concept by acting as fodder for ridiculous arguments. And suddenly I felt a lot better.

All of that is a very roundabout way of stating that these awards are clearly set all in good fun, so you probably shouldn’t be getting too hung up on your personal picks for the awards, or the abundantly clear silliness of the whole event.

Steam Award nominations are currently live and will be closing by November 29 when the Steam Black Friday Sale finally wraps up. The winners will be announced sometime in December. So stay tuned for some mind boggling entries!
