mafia 3

Despite receiving somewhat mixed reactions from multiple reviewers prior to its release, Mafia 3 seems to have become somewhat of a major success for 2K, especially if you consider the number of copies sold to game retailers. As it seems to have happened, the open world vintage crime title has officially shipped approximately 4.5 million copies within its first week, which has set up a launch record for the company 2K Games. no other title in its massive stable of releases has ever shipped that many units within its launch week.

As it seems to have happened, the open world vintage crime title has officially shipped approximately 4.5 million copies within its first week, which has set up a launch record for 2K Games. No other title in its massive stable of releases has ever shipped that many units within its launch week.

This news with regards to Mafia 3’s massive shipping numbers has come from 2K’s parent company Take-Two Interactive. The gaming giant relayed the sales details to The Washington Post. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that Mafia 3 has sold a record-setting number of copies, as a sold-through number — that is, the exact amount that has been purchased by actual consumers — was not shared.

Nevertheless, Mafia 3’s launch week shipping of 4.5 million makes the vintage crime-laden launch title the “fastest-selling title in 2K Games’ history”. And for all those who’re unaware, this means that the game has completely surpassed all of the previously set sales records by some of the developer’s other largely recognised franchises such as Borderlands, BioShock, and NBA 2K.

While it’s currently not clear as to just how many physical or digital copies of Mafia 3 were actually sold to gamers, it’s also quite possible that the large figure of 4.5 million units which were shipped to retailers could be a decent indicator of the actual purchases made by consumers as well. After all, not long before its worldwide launch, the annual Nielsen sales survey clearly indicated that Mafia 3 was “one of the most anticipated games of holiday 2016”. Regardless, we will just have to wait and see if all the eagerness translated to a genuine sales boon.

Mafia 3 is currently available for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
