Earlier last week, the interwebs had been buzzing with constant chatter about Samsung’s new stretchable display technology. It was then suggested that the Korean giant will show off this first-of-its-kind OLED screen at Society for Information Display 2017 (SID 2017) at the Los Angeles Convention Center. We’ve now got out hands on a split-screen video of the 9.1-inch stretchable display.

While we had only a static image of the OLED stretchable display last week, we can now witness the screen in all its glory — in action! In the video attached below, you can quite easily notice that the screen stretches and can be seen due to the glow in the center of the OLED display.

But, did you notice something different about this display as compared to Samsung’s screens being used in the Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S8?

The highlight of this stretchable OLED display is the fact that it does not only bend or fold in only one direction as seen in the curved displays used in Edge phones of the S-series lineup. Instead, Samsung has been able to take a step further and introduce an elasticity in the screen, making it capable of bending in both directions. This means the stretchable display will move in and out of the plane it is currently lying against — stretching 12 millimeters in either direction.

This balloon-like display is currently in early stages of development and is being touted as the ‘next-generation’ technology for displays. Samsung can be seen riding the high wave of revenues, even after the Galaxy Note 7 explosions and recalls, thanks to the chip and display business.

While the stretchable displays are currently not being mass-produced, the Korean giant’s OLED panels are in exceptionally high demand in the present market. It is especially because Apple is also making the unexpected jump from its Retina displays to OLED screens with the tenth anniversary iPhone 8. It has already ordered 70 million displays to meet the demand for the much-awaited overhauled variants of the iPhone.
