The iPad Mini has been around or a pretty long time. However, if reports concerning a new product along the lineup at the company’s upcoming WWDC event are true, well, the Mini could well be reaching the end of its tether. There are reports that the Cupertino giant could soon stop updating the iPad Mini.
We have already had reports that Apple is planning to launch a new 10.5-inch iPad at its upcoming WWDC event. The company is expected to bring out the device as an upgrade to the pre-existing 9.7-inch iPad Pro. The company has already released a $320, 9.7-inch iPad which means that it now has several new devices in the market which cater to all sorts of users.
This puts credence to rumors that the iPad Mini could be going of shelfs soon. Judging by Apple’s usual product cycle as well, it has been almost 5 years since the device was first made public. The conditions during its debut were vastly different and it was one of the only to strike the perfect balance between display size and weight.
Now though, things have changed and smartphones have grown larger while tablets have grown significantly lighter. As such, it does seem a bit redundant to keep a device with 5-year old hardware around and keep updating it when the company could simply offer consumers something new and better. Apple could soon decide to take the device off shelfs following which it could quietly kill off support from the same, or limit it merely to security updates and patches.
What I would personally love, is another device just a bit larger than the Mini an with upgraded hardware specs. However, hoping for a cheap tablet from Apple probably isn’t a great idea considering that the company has already put a $320 device on the table.
