Apple 'sorry' about the lack of Mac Pro upgrades, says an all-new model is coming in 2018

Apple fanboys, attention! Though the Cupertino giant generally keeps mum about its upcoming launches, but the executives have now blabbered their mouths off to a small gathering of select journalists in the Product Realization Lab at Apple’s headquarters. The details of the products have been kept under wraps but now we at least know that the company is prepping to launch a completely redesigned Mac Pro, iMac and an external Pro display (kaboom! they surprisingly dropped a bomb).

Now, I know what the most important piece of technology is among the three mentioned Apple products and I’m also aware that you are dying to know more about the same. The Mac Pro was launched as the company’s feature-packed desktop computer back in 2013. But sadly, that was the only iteration of the CPU which launched and the shiny dustbin-shaped computer was forgotten by Apple. The machine has received no love (read upgrades!) for the last four odd years and this has indescribably frustrated Apple fanboys.

But, you fanboys should now start gearing up to replace that old piece of technology as Apple executives — Phil Schiller (Senior VP of Worldwide Marketing); Craig Federighi (Senior VP of Software Engineering) and John Ternus (VP of Hardware Engineering) — have confirmed that the next-generation Mac Pro is in the works. Firstly, they apologized for neglecting the device and “pause in upgrades and updates” but they then cautiously doled out some deeds about the upcoming device.

Talking about the upcoming all-new Mac Pro, Schiller told the reporters,

We’re working on it. We have a team working hard on it right now, and we want to architect it so that we can keep it fresh with regular improvements, and we’re committed to making it our highest-end, high throughput desktop system, designed for our demanding pro customers.

This means that Apple is “completely rethinking” the Mac Pro and an all-new design for the desktop device is currently in the works. Since the upcoming iPhone lineup should’ve been pretty much finalized until now, the Cupertino giant is turning to the design board to work on the Mac Pro. Schiller boldly accepts that the design of the Mac Pro was fresh and clever but analysts were wary about the longevity and configurability, reports TechCrunch. And that’s exactly what happened. The device became the loner of the classroom.

Commenting on the design of the previous Mac Pro, Federighi said,

We designed ourselves into a bit of a corner. We wanted to do something bold and different. What we didn’t appreciate completely at the time was how we had so tailored that design to a specific vision that in the future we would find ourselves a bit boxed in — into a circular shape (which packed inside the internals in a triangular design).

But, Apple seems to have learned its lesson by torturing us for years. And Schiller says that the next Mac Pro device is being designed with modularity as the center of attention. The Cupertino giant has most likely just started working on the device and will not release the same until 2018. But, Schiller did mention that it would debut alongside a new external Pro display and a redesigned iMac. This is an exciting (and significant) news update. He further continues to add,

As part of doing a new Mac Pro — it is, by definition, a modular system — we will be doing a Pro display as well. Now you won’t see any of those products this year; we’re in the process of that. We think it’s really important to create something great for our pro customers who want a Mac Pro modular system, and that’ll take longer than this year to do.

Apple understands that this meaningful update (with negligible details) would elevate your heartbeat and make you crave the new Mac Pro this instant. Thus, it has given the current lineup a specification bump but in the same price bracket. This means that you will now have all this crazy processing power — 6-core Intel Xeon processor, dual AMD FirePro D500 GPUs and 16GB of memory for $2,999 and a $1,000 bucks extra for an 8-core processor and dual D700 GPUs. But, as you already know, we’d suggest everyone wait for the coming Mac Pro, which will land sometime in 2018.
