The quarterly report of Tesla’s production and deliveries for Q1 2017 reveal surprising numbers, unveiling the popularity of the brand despite searing product prices. Though the Tesla’s electric powertrain Model X SUV beats its kin Model S Sedan in terms of price and obviously space, the fresh report details a 69% increase in deliveries of the SUV model over the same period last year.
The company makes a new record by registering a sale of “just over” 25,000 cars delivered for the first quarter in 2017. This suggests the gap between Tesla’s Model X SUV and Model S Sedan is soon to swell, considering the figures published by the company. While 13,450 units of its Model S sedan were delivered in the quarter, approx. 11,550 units of the Model X SUV were dispatched during the same period. For the record, a year earlier, Tesla supplied 12,420 sedans while 2,400 SUVs were delivered during the same period.
Moreover, there is a 33% incline from Q3 2016 deliveries for Model X, which account for approximately 8,700 cars. We can say that the idea to manufacture a cheaper Model X variant in July 2016 has hit the market which is apparently visible in the company reports.
Besides its achievement in the Model X segment, it has also scored in terms of overall production for the first quarter. Tesla is said to have produced 25,418 vehicles in Q1 2017. It calculates to 46.2% deliveries for Model X of all cars Tesla delivered in the quarter. Since the company aims to deliver about 40-50k vehicles by the first half of 2017, the number supports the vision for Tesla — given the 4,650 vehicles in transit to customers and results for the past quarter.
It is also expected that the numbers might just surge up in the coming months considering the adequate supply of Model X parts now–which witnessed a shortage during the first two months of 2017. Moreover, Tesla is soon to commence production of its affordable Model 3 Sedan, anticipated around July this year. Analysts further say the Model 3 priced at just $35000 will significantly increase Tesla’s sales volumes by reducing the cost of production and accelerating the automation.
