To ease the process of fueling up your vehicles, Jaguar has partnered with Shell to introduce a new cashless payment feature for the in-car entertainment system. This enables the customer to securely pay for fuel at gas pumps from right within their vehicles using Apple Pay or PayPal. The said feature is currently being made available to users, whose Jaguar’s are equipped with InControl Apps, in the U.K.

Talking about the launch, Peter Virk, Jaguar Land Rover’s Director of Connected Car and Future Technology says,

In a world where cash is no longer king, customers are increasingly using electronic payments and contactless cards. Making a payment directly from a car’s touchscreen will make refueling quicker and easier. With this new system you can choose any pump at the gas station and pay for the fuel even if you’ve forgotten your wallet or can’t find your credit or debit card.

This in-car payment feature requires you to download the Shell app to complete payments, specifically at Shell gas stations. On installation, the said application will appear on the touchscreen of your Jaguar — currently supported by F-PACE, XE and XF models in the U.K. You can then choose the amount of gas you need, and pre-pay for the fuel using digital payment methods.

The said service works using geolocation data in combination with Apple Pay or PayPal to complete transactions. This is more convenient than pulling out your credit card and standing in queues to pay for the refilling. Once the payment is complete, the app also shows a receipt on the dashboard display. A copy of the same receipt is also forwarded to the email address used by the user during the sign-up process.

Further, David Bunch, Global VP of Shell Retail Marketing and Chairman of Shell Brands International comments,

In 2015 Shell introduced mobile payments at the pump in the UK. Today we are proud to offer the next step in cashless motoring, with Jaguar and Land Rover customers in the UK paying for their fuel using the car’s touchscreen.

As the world’s number one global fuels retailer, this e-commerce collaboration with Jaguar Land Rover is part of Shell’s commitment to continuously improve the digital experience for our customers.

Additionally, the said functionality is currently only being made available to iPhone users. The Shell app hasn’t currently been made available on Android. But the app, as well as Android Pay support is expected to arrive sometime later in 2017. The payment feature is also expected to be extended worldwide across every Jaguar performance SUV, sportscar, and sports sedan equipped with InControl Apps in coming weeks.

Further, Jaguar continues to add that paying for refueling your vehicle isn’t the sole application of this technology. The same can be further extended to include parking locations, drive-through restaurants, toll booths, and other services. And the company is currently engaged in talks with e-commerce companies to facilitate cashless motoring in the future.
