It looks like Android smartphone vendors have taken a cue from the fast iOS 8 penetration which Tim Cook demonstrated yesterday. As a result, after Motorola, now Sony has announced that it will bring the 5.0 update to the entire Xperia Z lineup.
Android’s performance, as far as market penetration of its latest updates is concerned, has always been pathetic. Android 5.o is already out, but still, a large number of OEMs haven’t rolled out the KitKat update yet. This can be attributed largely to the open-source nature of Android, which gives access to a large number of vendors, and hence makes the update roll-out process, painfully slow.
But this time, with the 5.0 update, we are surely seeing a change of scenario. Hours ago, Sony announced, that they will be rolling out the 5.0 update to the entire Xperia Z lineup. In a blog post, Sony said,
We’ll be making Sony Mobile’s Android “L” upgrade available for the entire premium Z series*: including Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1S, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1 Compact, Xperia Z2, Xperia Z2 Tablet, Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3v, Xperia Z3 Compact and Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact. Sony Z Ultra Google Play edition devices will be first up – we’ll be back with more details on that soon.
As mentioned, following devices will receive the 5.0 update :
- Xperia Z
- Xperia ZL/ZR
- Xperia Z1/Z1S/Z1 Compact
- Xperia Z Ultra
- Xperia Z2/Z2 Tablet
- Xperia Z3/Z3v/Z3 Compact/Z3 Tablet Compact
But before the aforementioned devices receive any updates, Sony’s Z Ultra Google Play Edition will be the first one to receive the Android Lollipop update.
Apart from Sony, Motorola too, on the Android L launch day itself, announced that it will be rolling out the updates for all of its devices, soon.
