Only a few weeks ago, Microsoft launched its lightweight Surface Pro, priced at $799. It has been a long-standing observation that Microsoft’s Surfaces usually have a few early launch bugs and this is so with the Pro as well.

According to a number of reports that were first seen by Windows Central, as well as on Reddit, the Pro apparently randomly goes to sleep when the user is in the middle of an action, such as typing. If this happens, you then have to press the down on the power button and log into your system again. But, it is being reported that some Surface Pro users have also lost data during this process, which surely is turning out be extremely frustrating and concerning.

According to an excerpt from a Reddit thread that explains what is happening with the bug,

At random intervals, the screen goes black and the device seems to power off while I am actively using it (typing). Pressing the power button presents the black and white windows logo and a few seconds later a login screen with the desktop in the exact setup before the shutdown.

Because there have been very few cases reported so far, it is unclear as to how many people have been affected by this bug.

Users have tried to reinstall device drivers but this has not helped. One solution that a user reported was doing a factory reset. However, this erases all the data on your device including apps, settings, photos, and documents. Microsoft has not offered any guidance yet either.

Hopefully, the company will release a firmware update in the coming weeks to fix this problem once it figures out the cause. Until then, try to safeguard your data and regularly save it so you don’t lose it even if your device goes to nap again!

If you’re suffering from this problem, make sure to add to the Microsoft support forum so they can better understand how to fix this issue. So far, thirty one people have posted on the forum.
