The Google I/O 2017 developer conference is presently underway at the Shoreline Amphitheater and CEO Sundar Pichai has taken center stage to announce that Gmail is finally getting the company’s well-known ‘smart replies’ feature.
Smart Reply was first added to Inbox for Google, the experimental email client which made management of emails easier for Gmail users. The said feature was then ported over to the company’s smart messaging giant Allo, and its smartwatch OS, Android Wear 2.0 released at the previous I/O conference. And now, it is coming to the Gmail client on mobile, both on Android and iOS.
Google’s AI algorithms have steadily made their way into most of the search giant’s solutions, Gmail being just one of them. The said algorithms take a peek at your incoming emails to understand the text and then suggest you very short, three to four-word replies at the bottom of the email screen itself.
You can simply tap on any one of the smart replies and then will be pushed to the reply screen to edit the reply before sending it out to the user. But, it will be immensely helpful when you are on the move, stuck in a meeting or when your battery is about to die then just tap the smart reply and hit the send button.
The smart reply feature looks and works in a manner that’s exactly similar to the Inbox. It is one of the features that has been available within the email client for a while and has improved over time. There can, however, still be times when the said feature doesn’t exactly provide you you with the best reply. But, don’t worry!
Since the following service is backed by artificial intelligence, smart replies on Gmail will learn more about your habits over time. It has been described in the official blog post as under:
Smart Reply utilizes machine learning to give you better responses the more you use it. So if you’re more of a “thanks!” than a “thanks.” person, we’ll suggest the response that’s, well, more you!
