Google’s I/O conference has begun folks and we want you to hold on to your seats as we bring you exciting news and insights from the event. We have just had CEO Sundar Pichai take the stage and announce that the Android platform has now exceeded over 2 Billion users.

The Google CEO took to the stage to applause and kicked off the event while recounting some of his company’s most notable achievements of late.

As of this week, [Android] has crossed over 2 billion active users.

That is huge! Times bigger than any other ecosystem out there.

The Google CEO also stressed on the fact that the time had come to make the shift from mobile first to AI first and how the company was having to make fundamental changes to welcome the shift.

We spoke last year about this shift from Mobile first to AI first. Mobile made us re-imagine everything we were working on. We had to fundamentally re-imagine everything we were doing.

He added:

With AI first, we’re doing the same. 

Pichai also offered some other interesting data points. While Google’s Photos App had arrived at a 500 million landmark within 2 years of launch, users were uploading as many as 1.2 Billion photos everyday! Similarly, Google Drive launched five years ago, now boasts of over 800 Million active users.

Pichai also took the time to touch upon the improvements Google has made i its voice transcription service. Incorrect word rate for the service had dropped from 8.5 percent to 4.9 percent in less than a year! That is some improvement when you consider that it is an AI we are talking about. It can recognize roughly 95 words out of a hundred correctly!
