Sprinkles

Microsoft has launched a brand new camera application for the iOS ecosystem. Called Sprinkles, the app is powered by machine learning and has earned  a spot for itself in the “New apps we love” section of the App Store. The idea behind the app is to take a regular photo editing application and turn it into something significantly more powerful by application of machine learning. The app appears to be aimed at a millennial audience and judging by the interest they have shown in  applications of the sort, it is no great mystery while Sprinkles has received a good debut.

So here is the deal with Sprinkles: You can use the app for regular picture playfulness like stickers, emoji and captions, but you can also leverage the machine learning that accompanies the app to do things like detect faces, determine the subject’s age, figure out the dominant emotion and get your vanity pumped by letting the app tell you which celebrity you look like. The app also has an automatic captioning service that as the name implies, automatically gives your picture a suitable caption that will make your friends wonder at your witticism.

Microsoft isn’t exactly bringing a revolution about here. All these applications are already available in one form or the other. For example, the company has propagated tools like CelebsLike.me and How-Old.net, which do almost the same thing however, it has now combined them into a single interface and allowed iOS users to download and use it on their smartphones. There are various options available in each category, so there are different captions, different filters and so on and you can take your pick through them. You can also add in your own images, text as well.

The final images can be saved to your gallery or even shared with your friends using a multitude of options that cover most popular means of communication. Let’s see how Microsoft’s fresh attempt at appealing directly to the millennial fares. There are huge opportunities in the field (read, Snapchat) and Sprinkles is certainly looking up with a good start.
