Tesla’s Model 3 cars are right around the corner. The company has already begun teasing fans and yesterday, Elon Musk released a video which showed a production ready car zooming on a street. The Tesla CEO took to Twitter today to announce that a performance oriented variant of Model 3 could also be released come next year.
At $35,000, the Model 3 is Tesla’s chance to do volume sales. However, the car is significantly cheaper from Tesla’s other, pricier offering. For instance, the Model S cars start off at somewhere around $70,000 and max out at almost $135,000. All this extra cash goes into giving them extra features and some extra muscle. With that said, car geeks looking for some more power from the Model 3 will find their wishes fulfilled next year or so.
Musk was very active on Twitter last evening and many made us of the occasion to ask some questions.
@elonmusk is there going to be a Performance 3? Would love to see the power of a Model S with the light weight of a Model 3

Answering a question regarding a performance Model 3 Musk said:
@dr_angus Yeah, probably a year from now. S will still win on acceleration though, due to having more space for a larger battery.

So there you have it, straight from the horse’s mouth. A performance Model 3 is in the works and will be released later. It will likely be priced higher than the base variant and pack some extra power into the bargain.
We don’t exactly know what kind of power the original Model 3 will pack. All we know about the car, is that it will have a range of around 215 miles on a single charge and that it will pack all the sensors and hardwares required to be fully self-driving.
