In the midst of his Reddit AMA yesterday, Valve’s president and the don of the gaming industry, Gabe Newell mentioned that Valve is, in fact, developing new video games. And the one inevitable question we all knew would be making an appearance, did come up during the conversation (psstt..it’s about Half-Life).
Newell jokingly stated that “the number 3 must not be said,” but also confirmed that Valve has at this point at least one single player game under development. Also, he said “yes” when asked if the company is developing “any fully-fledged single player games.”
When questioned in another thread if Valve would ever actually consider revisiting the Half-Life and Portal universe in a brand new game, Newell answered somewhat positively. It’s not exactly Half-Life 3: Confirmed, but it is now a possible Half-Life Related Game: Not Out of the Question. So, you can get your hopes up but only a little.
As for the titles that are currently being developed by Valve, Newell revealed little more except that they are, as one would’ve expected anyway, being developed on their Source 2 engine and that VR games are also in the works.
We are continuing to use Source 2 as our primary game development environment, aside from moving Dota 2 to the engine recently, we are are using it as the foundation of some unannounced products.
We would like to have everyone working on games here at Valve to eventually be using the same engine. We also intend to continue to make the Source 2 engine work available to the broad developer community as we go, and to make it available free of charge.
