Xiaomi has been often recognized as the home for affordable smartphones. But it is more often than not, rebuked for lacking on the creative and innovation front. That perception, might just change a bit. (not much though)
At a launch event in Beijing today, Xiaomi has finally given shape to the one smartphone that would make techies go gaga and lose control. The company has shown off a charming new concept phone called ‘Mi MIX’ which is real, functional and highlights the display as the stand-out quality of its design.
This super-crazy smartphone packs in a crisp 6.4-inch bezel-less display. Yes, you read it right. BEZEL-LESS!! The company took to the stage to compare it with the iPhone 7 Plus and boasted about its staggering 91.3 percent screen to body ratio.
Though every other smartphone on the market has a bulky top and bottom chin, Xiaomi has miraclously done away with the bezel on the top. It has managed to pack in an edge-to-edge display to cover the top of the phone which usually houses the earpiece, front camera, and proximity sensors. The company has now repositioned the front camera to the bottom chin and the sensors have been placed behind the display. It has also redesigned the speaker interface using piezoelectric ceramic and embedded it behind the edgeless display.
This edgeless display is the highlight of Mi Mix, and has been designed by French designer Philippe Starck. This smartphone comes encased in a glossy black ceramic body, alongwith the back, frame, buttons and even the acoustic system to provide it with a premium and tough feel.
The insides of this beauty also pack in some serious processing power as it runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor clocked at 2.35 Ghz. It has then been coupled with a 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage. It also packs in a humongous 4,400 mAh battery to juice up the phone, which also features Quick charge 3.0. The Mi Mix runs on Android Marshmallow 6.0 with Xiaomi’s own custom MIUI 8 on top of it.
On the camera front, the Mi Mix also sports a 16-megapixel primary camera with phase detection autofocus(PDAF) coupled alongwith a 5-megapixel front shooter for all your selfie needs. It also features a fingerprint reader on the back, under the rear camera module. The Mi Mix also provides all necessary connectivity options, including NFC.
Though the smartphone has been dubbed a concept, the Mi Mix will retail and be available in two variants. The standard model which pack in 4GB of RAM and 128GB storage will cost you RMB 3499(approx Rs. 34,500) while the other model ‘Mi Mix Pro’ will pack in 6GB of RAM and 256GB storage. This variant priced at RMB 3,999(approx Rs. 39,500) also features 18K gold plating on the camera and fingerprint sensor.
You’ll be able to order this concept smartphone in China starting tonight. Xiaomi has currently not dispensed any info on the release of the same in India.
