In a bid to enhance its enterprise offering in the AWS-dominated cloud computing domain, Google announced today that it has acquired Orbitera, a company that develops and hosts tools for buying and selling cloud-based software.
Founded in 2011 by Firas Bushnaq and Brian Singer and based in West Hollywood, California, Orbitera was started with an aim to fix some of the “transactional and operational challenges associated with selling software”. The co-founders state that they had personally come across these challenges while founding and working at previous tech companies. The company has had the backing of many renowned investors including Double M Partners and Resolute Ventures. Customers include Adobe, Esri, NetApp and Oracle.
Apparently, Orbitera has worked alongside Amazon Web Services in the past, too. The company’s chief executive Marcin Kurc previously spent three years working at AWS.
While that makes for a very interesting profile, the main reason Google has added this startup to its Google Cloud Platform team is because it is aiming to provide state-of-the-art services that Amazon’s AWS, Salesforce and Microsoft will have a hard time trying to rival.
Orbitera provides a commerce platform that makes buying and selling software in the cloud simple, seamless and scalable for all kinds of businesses. These could include independent software vendors, service providers or even IT channel organizations.
