While plenty of us have our favorite titles on our PC at home, or on a gaming console, there are occasional moments when we don’t have either of those things with us. Maybe you’ve got an extra ten minutes of your lunch break and you’ve only got the office computer, or you’re on the train and only have your phone with you. In these moments, a browser-based game can be really helpful. These games can be played in any web browser and we’ve chosen ones where you can log in, so your progress can be saved. This means that you can take any of these games anywhere with you as long as you’ve got an internet-enabled device. Sound good? Let’s get into it then!

Wordle

First up is a game that took the world by storm last year, Wordle. This game was invented, rather charmingly, for a man whose girlfriend was such a huge fan of word games, that he thought she’d enjoy one of her own. He set to work devising a game that would be quick but challenging and came up with the idea of a game where you guess a five-letter word. He got his girlfriend to rank how familiar she was with an enormous number of five-letter words and then launched the game. It was an overnight success, so much so that the New York Times bought it for $1 million last year. If you want to play then you just need to go to the games section of their website and select Wordle. A screen with five grey squares will appear and you need to put a word in them. If you guess a letter correctly it will turn green, correctly but in the wrong space it will turn amber, and incorrectly it will be greyed out. The smaller the number of guesses it takes to get the word correct, the better.

Freeciv

Freeciv is a great option for strategic gamers who enjoy longer gaming times. This game is unashamedly based on the popular Civilization series, using the same sort of methodology and user interface to allow players to take their civilization from a collection of travelers to a thriving infrastructure of cities. Those who have played Civilization might find Freeciv a little clunky. To begin with, the game works on a square grid instead of a hexagonal one, which can make movements take a little longer. As well as this, the interface for each of the playable characters can be lengthy and a little tricky to navigate at the beginning of the game. However, for a totally free version, with no download necessary, this game can’t be praised enough. You’ll love finding the best places to settle, defending your cities from others, and watching your civilization flourish.

Card Games

Some of us love nothing more than a game of cards and whilst the ‘analog’ version is alright, you’ve got to find people to play with you. If you’ve only got your computer for the company then a browser-based game is definitely the way to go. There are so many options for what you’d like to play, including some that will let you connect with friends to play online, some with incredible 3D graphics, and others that you can enter tournaments in. If you’re a little stuck on what features you’d like from a game then poker might be a good choice. This is one of the card games that has been the most heavily invested in by developers, meaning you’re almost guaranteed the best playing experience. If you’ve not played poker before then choosing the casino for you can be a little tricky as there’s an awful lot of choice. Looking at online casino reviews is a good way to narrow down your options and the guidance from Arabian Betting is particularly helpful. They have reviewed a huge number of casinos and always take into account their reputation, the available games that they have, and if they have any bonuses that new customers can make use of. Snagging a bonus is a good way to get to grips with poker without spending your own money.

Game of Thrones

Finally, with consumer spending on video games growing, it’s worth mentioning one of the most profitable titles of the last decade, Game of Thrones. It might surprise you to know that there’s an officially-licensed browser-based Game of Thrones game and though George R R Martin didn’t write the script for it himself, it still stands up under scrutiny. There’s plenty of dragon action, with the option to hatch and nurture dragons of your own. There are also battles galore, and plenty of relationship drama. Finally, the fact that this is a multiplayer game gives a whole other element to exploring this wild 3D world. We love it and are pretty sure that you will too.
