Walmart Labs, which is a product development arm of US-based retail giant Walmart and the parent company of Flipkart, has announced that it has acqui-hired Bengaluru-based data annotation startup Dataturks.

Founded by former Flipkart executives Mohan Gupta and Gajendra Dadheech last year, Dataturks offers a software-as-a-service (SaaS) tool that enables teams to annotate text and image data using machine learning.

As a part of this acquisition deal, both the founders of the company — Mohan Gupta and Gajendra Dadheech has joined its merchant technology team. A Walmart spokesperson said:

With their deep domain expertise in ML and large application development experience, this team will help drive further innovations in the catalogue quality, anomaly detection, search innovations and many other aspects of Walmart Merchandising platforms.

In India, Walmart has an entity that works out of Bengaluru and operates as the idea incubator for Walmart. The acqui-hire deal of Dataturks marks Walmart Labs’ third such deal in India in the recent past. Earlier, it acquired the whole team of Int.ai and Appsfly.

After acquiring Flipkart for around $16 billion, it appears that Walmart is all set to boost its operations in India and has been aggressively expanding its team in India.

Recently, it was reported that the company is looking to hire more than 1,000 employees in technology roles at its India offices to bolster its product development initiatives. It is hiring mainly in the areas of machine learning, merchandise, supply chain, data science, product managers and cloud experts.
