While Apple puts its plans to bring out their first ever 5G smartphone on hold until mid-2020, a Samsung 5G phone could hit the shelves as early as the first half of 2019. Samsung has partnered with Verizon to bring out their first ever 5G smartphone, which many speculate to be the Samsung Galaxy S10. Samsung would be revealing a proof of concept this week at the Qualcomm Snapdragon Summit at Maui, Hawaii.
Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X50 is a 5G modem which is expected to used by Samsung for their US version of the S10, while the Samsung’s own Exynos 5100 modem would be used for their International variant. Samsung finds itself in the company of other brands such as LG, Motorola, One Plus and Huwaei – all which are expected to put out their respective 5G enabled smartphones next year. The battle between the mobile carriers in the US gets heated as well. AT&T, Sprint and T-mobile have been racing to be the first network to fully embrace 5G with Verizon much ahead of the pack. They have signed two major partnerships – one with Samsung and one with Motorola. Verizon already provides commercial 5G services in Houston, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, and Sacramento.
5G is said to be one of the biggest breakthroughs in the world of network and connectivity. While 4G was sufficient to meet demands such as sending emails, browsing the web and using social media, it left us wanting for more when it came to video calling services. 5G is expected to significantly improve in this field. It’s promised to be extremely fast and will offer downloads and uploads at speeds hundreds of times faster than 4G LTE (on par with broadband services). It will also expand data capacity and bandwidth, boost coverage and improve upon network reliability.
