All of us are familiar with Facebook. Indeed, we probably spend at least a substantial portion of our days on the platform. However, are you aware of the social networking platform’s mission statement? Well, yes. Even Faebook has a mission statement and it is Making the world more open and connected. Or at least it used to be.
Facebook has announced that it is changing its statement to better reflect a new mission. The new statement is significantly more focused and leaves less room for ambiguity. CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed the same today, stating that Facbook’s new mission was to:
Give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together.
The change was announced at the company’s communities summit which sees participation from the admins of some of the biggest groups present on the platform. Speaking at the event, Zuckerberg said:
For the last decade or so we’ve been focusing on making the world more open and connected. But I used to think that if we just give people a voice and help some people connect that that would make the world a whole lot better by itself. But look around and our society is still so divided. We have a responsibility to do more, not just to connect the world but to bring the world closer together.
And yes, Facebook is going to be making some fundamental changes to how it works, in order to better reflect its new mission. A per Zuckerberg:
We want to help 1 billion people join meaningful communities. If we can do this it will not only reverse the whole decline in community membership we’ve seen around the world…but it will also strengthen our social fabric and bring the world closer together.
The event is still taking place and is shaping up to be even more interesting. Watch it live, right below:
