UPDATE: Samsung has confirmed that it will roll out an update by this week to satisfy the unpleasant customers. The update will fix the issue directly by adjusting the colour settings of the phone according to the consumer preference. The company further added that there is no problem with the phone itself. The official statement published by Samsung read,
The Galaxy S8 and S8+ are equipped with Super AMOLED displays to provide rich, expressive colors and optimal color range, saturation and sharpness depending on the environment. In the past, we have received feedback that consumers wanted the ability to customize the color setting of their Galaxy devices due to natural variations in displays, and we provided the option to do so in previous software updates. While the Galaxy S8 and S8+ have the ability for the user to modify the color of the display, Samsung has listened to feedback and has decided to release a software update as early as next week which will provide customers with a further enhanced ability to adjust the color setting to their preference.
PREVIOUSLY: Your excitement for tomorrow’s launch of Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus might fade out a bit as the devices are already being faced with a screen saturation issue in its home country. Lately, the company kicked off shipping for Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus to the customers who’d pre-ordered the handsets in South Korea. These customers are now complaining that their handsets have excessive red tint on the screens, hence delivering a visually unappealing device.
With regards to the same, ZDNet reports that while some of these complaints have been registered on popular local tech community sites Ppomppu and Ruliweb, few of the customers went to company’s service stores with their concerns. However, the visits cannot be verified independently.
In addition, Naver, South Korea’s native search engine shows that ‘Samsung S8 Red Screen’ was one of the most searched keywords recently. The pre-orders in South Korea crossed half a million, the last week as confirmed by Samsung Mobile Head, DJ Koh. It had garnered pre-orders for 728,000 units for its new phones at a time then, which must have crossed 1 million so far.
A report in the Korean Herald quotes Samsung addressing the concern, which reads,
It is not a quality problem and it can be adjusted with the phone itself. If the colour still appears to be reddish, customers can change it at the service center.
The company claims that it’s just a minor issue which can be solved manually. The customers can themselves adjust the brightness and color settings for the screen in the settings menu as per their comfort. Even if a customer represents dissatisfaction, Samsung would be happy to exchange the device, says a spokesperson.
Further researching the matter, Counterpoint Research analyst Neil Shah suspects that the Korean giant’s latest flagship uses a Deep Red OLED technology, which is the crux of the problem. The tech is said to make the usual whites look reddish and can be solved only through software calibration.
Since the Korean giant is banking on Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus to regain its reputation after the scandalous Note 7 explosions, the issue (even after being a petty problem) will create a sort of tension for Samsung. In India, Samsung is launching Galaxy S8 and S8+ in India on April 19th i.e. tomorrow.
