Google Earth may have lost its charm of recent, but Google hasn’t given up on its 3D mapping ambitions. And now, Google’s 3D maps are probably getting an upgrade in the coming week. The tech giant has today sent out press invites for the unveiling of a ‘new Google Earth’ experience. This event is being organized on April 18 in New York city, just four days before Earth Day.
While the information for what Google has in store for the event are pretty scarce. The invite, however, mentions that we should gear up to get acquainted with a ‘brand new experience’ for Google Earth. And that’s it. No more hints on what we should expect from this event have been dispensed. This development was first reported by The Next Web.
Google Earth is one of the few services which allows you to explore the complete planet using a browser or desktop app. Though it has currently been pushed to the corner with Google Maps gaining immense popularity in the last couple of years, the technology giant is still gunning for improvements in its 3D mapping software. Thus, it is dedicating a whole event to unveil the upgrades to the mapping software.
As for what to expect from the event, a major redesign of the complete Google Earth experience will definitely be in store. As Google had earlier announced, it will open-source its Google Earth Enterprise software somewhere around March. Thus, we, especially the developers will be given a taste of how to employ the same. This software is pretty useful as it enables any company to deploy Google Maps and Google Earth on their on-premises data center infrastructure.
Also, Google has recently been placing focus on providing users access to virtual reality experiences from around the globe. It already debuted a Google Earth VR application for HTC Vive headset owners on Steam last year. But, the company has since expanded on its own VR efforts and could be looking to port the said application to the Daydream VR platform. You can expect a first look and hands-on experience with the same. It will also be adding to the collection of experiences which are already available in the VR app.
