In a bid to increase the audience reach of its Moments platform, Facebook has given it its own standalone website. It should be remembered that this is the second time that the social media platform is introducing the Moments app to web proper. The first time around, Facebook had merely added a link to the service in the desktop version of Facebook. This time though, it is going in for the kill with a full fledged website for Moments.
However, I was merely toying with words when I said that the company had gone in for the kill. The web version of the Moments is about as functional as the service you reached when clicking on the desktop link — which means, it has very little to offer. The website merely displays a full list of your albums but that is pretty much it. If you were expecting a complete interface with all the functionalities of the app, well prepare for some major disappointments.
For instance, buttons for liking or commenting on photos simply don’t work. They are there however, clicking on them merely gives you a prompt for downloading the mobile application. You can click on the prompt and then enter your phone number to get a link to download the Moments mobile app, texted to your smartphone. Kind of defeats the purpose of going to a web platform in the first place however, there you have it.
However, in case you are wondering why Facebook bothered to launch the web platform at all — well, it does have its uses. For instance, users who do not have the app installed can still use the web version to view pictures. Facebook could well bring in other functionalities as well however, the company has not disclosed any such plans and there is no information available upon when — and if — the company will make such a move.
The website could also be used to drive additional traffic to the Moments app. Eventually of course, Facebook could add all the features that are required into the platform however, adding an initial shell could well be the precursor to committing more fully.
Meanwhile, you can check out the new Moments website right here.
