Well, isn’t that surprising? Andy Rubin, who co-founded Android and is now launching his own range of smartphones through Essential, has decided to stick to the very same ecosystem. This has been confirmed by none other than Eric Schmidt of Alphabet, who called the smartphones the company will sell as “phenomenal”.
As per Schmidt:
Phenomenal new choices for Android users coming very soon. An example! https://t.co/3fwvYl6vlu

This was in response to an earlier tweet by Rubin.
I’m really excited about how this is shaping up. Eager to get it in more people’s hands… pic.twitter.com/LRzQCFSKTm

Interesting. That the Alphabet chairman is going to the trouble of calling out a smartphone brand shows that Google isn’t really going all tooth and fangs into competition with other smartphone makers despite launching its own range of devices. After all, Google also operates one of the most popular operating systems around and it would have been rather odd had it exhibited animosity towards a smartphone being introduced into the market by one of the creators of that particular OS.
Instead, it appears as if Google is going to keep things cordial and is going to focus upon ensuring that its ecosystem offers users as much choice as possible. Plus, the company’s Nexus and Pixel series of smartphones aren’t really devices that would be competing in your lower and middle range phones. Instead, they are meant to cater to customers looking to purchase premium phones. As such, the Alphabet CEO calling out the new smartphone over Twitter is perfectly alright.
