Apple, iPhone

Well, if it isn’t Apple taking a leaf out of Samsung’s book for a change. According to the Wall Street Journal, the Cupertino giant could launch an ultra premium iPhone with a curved OLED screen to commemorate iPhone’s 10th anniversary. The last flagship we saw with a screen of the sort was none other than Apple arch-rival Samsung. And now, the iPhone maker is reportedly on track to follow suit.

As per a report, one of Apple’s latest iPhones could be seriously premium. And that is saying a lot considering that all of the company’s devices are generally top of the line. One of the next iPhone models is expected to sport not only a curved OLED screen, but is also expected to drop the lightning port in favor of USB-C.

As far as the curved screen is concerned, Samsung may be supplying Apple with more than just inspiration. The South Korean manufacturer is one of the world’s few that are capable of churning out curved screens at scale. So there is a likelihood that Apple will turn to its old enemy for the OLED screens.

As far as USB-C is concerned, Apple will be forced to let go of some of its pride and drop its lightning port. However, the move makes a lot of sense. For one, USB-C is capable of transmitting stuff faster than almost any other standard around — and that includes USB 3. Indeed, Apple already introduced the port into its ecosystem with its latest MacBook Pro. Considering that it has been facing criticism for forcing iPhone users to purchase a USB-C to Lightning cable for connecting their MacBooks with their iPhones, USB-C becoming the standard across the whole ecosystem with Apple’s next launch is all too likely.

The device could list as a premium option alongside iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus and is expected to sell upwards of a $1,000. That is a lot of money for even someone habituated to Apple devices. However, Apple has been selling devices with heavy price tags for a long time. Indeed, the price may be one of the reason why the company is launching it as a premium, limited edition choice.
