As of today, the UK has ranked second the world over, in terms of tech exits in 2016.

According to the ‘Global Tech Exits’ report, released earlier today by CB Insights, the United States climbed the top of the ladder with more than 1600 tech exits completed last year.

India came in third, followed by Canada, Germany and France which ranked in fourth, fifth and sixth place respectively, interestingly maintaining the exact positions they held on the list for the first half of 2016.

Other European countries such as Sweden and the Netherlands also made the top 10.

2016 has proved to be a pretty robust year for UK tech, which explains its soaring position on the list. The country has seen some significant advancements vis a vis tech startups; be it in the field of AI, HealthTech, FinTech, you name it, and somewhere in the UK there is probably “an app for that”.

The share of the UK sector

According to the report, about 55% of exits in the UK were carried out by companies operating in the internet space.

In contrast to that, a mere 13% of UK tech exits were carried out by companies in the mobile and telecommunications space.

Adding to these figures, of those that exited in 2016, 15% were software companies, 5% operated in the electronics space and only 1% developed consumer products and services.

The research also brings to light that O3B Networks, Skyscanner and MyOptique Group comprised the list of the most well-funded UK tech companies to exit last year.

Other top VC-funded firms included Onefinestay, Hailo, YPlan (which sold to the Time Out Group for just £1.6 million after raising $37.7 million since it was founded) and Swiftkey, bought by Microsoft.

Comparison to H1 2016

According a previous report, the UK was also ranked in second place throughout H1 2016, therefore maintaining its position for 2016 overall.

Similarly, the US also seems to have maintained its leading position as it was ranked first in the first half of last year.
