At the Facebook F8 Developer Conference today, Mark and his team discussed the difficulty of on-boarding people on a platform and how the Sign-Up with Facebook button had helped millions of users easily login and use an application. But not everyone has a Facebook Account, and thus making people login and use your app could become a difficult job.
Worry no more, because Facebook’s abundant developer tools has a new addition to it’s family, an Account Kit. It will actually help businesses grow and reach a much wider audience of people, because now you can login and use an application with just your mobile number or e-mail id.
Once you integrate Account kit into your apps, it starts giving users an option to either sign up using their Facebook accounts or via their mobile number. Now for users who do not wish to use their Facebook account for signing up on third-party apps or those who simply do not have a Facebook account at all, can simply put in their mobile number, receive an OTP, enter it and VOILA! you’re done.
It’s just that simple, and the service has already rolled out in beta to over 230 countries globally.
A screenshot of the video demo shows how the users can easily enter their mobile numbers and get an OTP code sent to their phone number for verification. This feature is currently BETA and Saavn, the popular music-streaming service saw a 33% spike in it’s userbase when they were using the Account Kit in addition to the Facebook sign Up.
This new API will definitely open new doors for a lot of indie and small-scale developers who now don’t need to focus on integrating a sign up for their users, but more on providing solutions for real world problems with a seamless experience.
