During Redmi Note 3 smartphone launch event in India earlier this month, Xiaomi had promised to launch Mi5 by the end of this month. Keeping its promise, the company has now officially introduced its flagship smartphone — the Mi5 in India, almost a month after the official unveiling.

The phone was officially introduced at Mobile World Congress last month. In India, the phone will be available exclusively via Mi.com — a stark depart from the usual, Flipkart flash sale strategy. The device will be powered by April 6 at a price of ₹24,999.

The Mi5’s biggest selling point could be the combination of an affordable price powered by a massively powerful SD 820. It comes with a 5.15 inch full HD display (1920 x 1080 pixels) with pixel density of 428 pixels per inch. As per the company, the display will be able to work at a brightness of 600-nits.

This time, Xiaomi has added a home button and has incorporated fingerprint sensor into it – just like Samsung and Apple. Under the hood, the phone is powered by Qualcomm’s latest and powerful Snapdragon 820 processor along with Adreno 530 GPU.

While the phone comes in three variants – 3GB RAM and 32GB internal storage, 3GB RAM and 64GB internal storage and 4GB RAM and 128GB internal storage, only base version will be available in India, i.e. 3GB RAM and 32GB internal storage.

On the photography front, the phone features a 16 megapixel rear camera with 4-axis OIS and support for 4K video recording and PDAF. The camera lens is protected by sapphire glass. There is also a 4 MP ultrapixel front facing camera with f/2.0 aperture.

The smartphone is running on the latest Android Marshmallow based MIUI 7. On the connectivity front, the phone comes with 4G LTE, 3G HSPA+, WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth v4.1, NFC, GPS and USB Type-C port.

The device is 7.25 mm thicka and wights 129 grams. It is powered by a 3,000mAh battery which also supports Quick Charge 3.0.

Considering the phone’s pricing – Rs. 24,999, it looks like a good value for money device. Also, it is the first smartphone available in India to be powered by Snapdragon 820 processor.

Xiaomi is focusing in Indian operations since quite some time. Except this Mi5 smartphone, all the recently launched smartphone from the company are manufactured in India under ‘Make In India’ initiative.

A couple of weeks ago, Xiaomi’s president revealed plans to consolidate company’s presence in India amidst a slowdown in China and other parts of the world. It plans to start two new factories in association with Foxconn, which is already producing 75% of the company’s phones in Andhra Pradesh.
