GitHub announced today that its on-premise solution for managing code, GitHub Enterprise, is finally getting its next big update. The company announced the release of GitHub Enterprise 2.5 which comes in with major updates.
The new update, GitHub noted, is especially meant for enterprises which have developers in the tens of thousands and are growing exponentially. The update brings new features like a better way to add new users to large installations, more ways to collaborate safely and other tools and updates that will help support your team as it gets bigger.
Let’s start with clustering.
GitHub Enterprise 2.5’s show-stopper feature is clustering. This service will enable mammoth enterprises to set up clusters which act as single installation units and simplify the mesh of clients. This framework helps administrators add more users to large installations. Apparently, the service requires additional administrative resources. GitHub wants users to check out the documentation to see how it works or contact their GitHub account manager to discuss scaling options.
The new feature Kakul Srivastava, GitHub’s VP of Product, told TechCrunch doesn’t currently come at an additional cost to GitHub’s enterprise users.
The new version of the coding hub also comes in with improved overall performance. Version 2.5 supports a new way to cache intensive operations which increases “resilience to the degraded performance that can happen with “thundering herds.””
You also get major design updates in the new version. You get newer simplified sign-in and authentication screens which will help you get to your accounts easily. Other design improvements include a new look for repositories. Here’s what’s new according to GitHub:
- The collapsing side menu is now a single, always present navigation, which improves accessibility and frees up more space for what matters to you—issues and pull requests.
- The Code tab now more prominently emphasizes cloning and comes with a redesigned protocol switcher containing explicit menu items with explanatory text for each cloning method.
You also get support for newer Subversions including versions 1.8 and 1.9.
