After a period of brief shun (courtesy of Apple is what my guess is), WhatsApp Web has gone live for select iOS users as well.
The WhatsApp website showed iPhone as supported device earlier today, and the same was pointed out by a Reddit user vmax77 (no surprise there).
To check if you have the feature already, head into WhatsApp, then settings and look for WhatsApp Web in the list.
The update seems to be rolling out gradually, and iOS users can see whether its been activated for their accounts yet by accessing the Settings menu. Once accessed, you should see a “WhatsApp Web” menu – if not, sit tight and check again in a few hours.
First launched in January, the service allowed Android, Symbian S60, BlackbBerry and Windows Phone users to carry out WhatsApp conversations via a laptop or desktop. However, the service was too basic in nature and it received a facelift in the form of letting users control group chats and conversations via their PCs this July. You can now mute and archive chats through the web interface as well.
You have to take a picture of a QR code to log into WhatsApp Web WhatsApp uses phone numbers and SMS to verify users instead of traditional usernames and passwords.It uses the phone connection.
The move comes at a time when the ubiquitous messaging app is facing stiff competition from the likes of Telegram (primarily due to privacy concerns), WeChat and Hike which had launched its voice messaging feature earlier than WhatsApp.
