Over the past few months, there have been rumors of a streaming service Disney has been working on. It appears as if the rumor mill was right for once, and the company has confirmed the impending launch of “Disney+”.

Disney confirmed the news via a tweet:

The Walt Disney Company’s new direct-to-consumer streaming service will be called Disney+, launching in the U.S. in late 2019: http://bit.ly/2ATonsM

The service is expected to hit the air by the end of next year, starting with the US. If you are curious about the timing of the launch, that’s because Disney currently has a contract with Netflix. However, by somewhere around this time next year, the contract will expire and the company will be free of any obligations towards Netflix.

The question remains: “What sort of content will be pushed out through the streaming service?”. Of course, content of kids, which is something that Disney specializes in, is expected to form the core of the content. However, Disney probably can’t expect to compete with the likes of Netflix and Prime Video, by dint of kids content alone – specially considering the fact that these services already have a separate section that caters specifically to youngsters.

With that said, it would be very interesting to see what the company, with all of its content partnerships brings to the table, and if there is some original content in the making for viewers.
