Samsung not showing off the Galaxy S8 at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona can be justified by the fact that the Korean giant has not yet made the final decision on internal specifications. The company is, however, steadily making progress and fresh reports suggest that a final decision on battery capacities for the Galaxy S8 has been reached.
According to reports from Korean publications, Samsung has decided to include smaller battery packs into its rather large-screen bezel-less phones. The rumored 5.8-inch Galaxy S8 will be powered by a 3,000mAh battery, which is equivalent to the one packed within the previous generation S series phone. The feature-packed Galaxy S7 was one of the better selling devices for the company last year.
The 6.2-inch Galaxy S8 Plus variant, on the other hand, will be powered by a 3,500 mAh battery pack. To again bring things into context, it is similar to the battery capacity of the Galaxy Note 7 — but we all know what happened to that. Also, this battery pack is relatively smaller as compared to Galaxy S7 Edge, which included a 3,600 mAh battery under the hood.
This report might have some weight to it as sources aware of the developments have received confirmation from Samsung officials. Talking about the same, the source says,
We decided to install the battery to be mounted on the Galaxy S8, test 3000mAh for the 5.8-inch model and 3500mAh for the 6.2-inch model.
Earlier, the Korean giant is said to have decided upon higher battery capacities for the Galaxy S8 lineup but the unfortunate Galaxy Note 7 explosions caused the aforementioned turnaround. Samsung, in its official release, pointed out 2 major flaws which caused their battery packs to catch fire and explode. Due to safety concerns, the company has also decided to switch battery suppliers and is now working with Japan-based Murata manufacturing and their subsidiary Samsung SDI (whose factory caught fire just yesterday).
Though the report might suggest that the source got his information directly from a Samsung official but we’d recommend you to take this update with a grain of salt. There is currently no way to confirm whether the company will include bezel-free displays, 3.5 mm audio jack, and smaller batteries. Also, reports suggesting the removal of its prominent home button have been making rounds of the interwebs for quite some time now.
